Releasing stepover development in Piranshahr region, northwestern Iran abstract
The NW-SE trending Piranshahr pull-apart basin, in the Piranshahr region of NW Iran, is formed between two right-stepping segments of the dextral Zagros Main Recent Fault. The basin has a Z-shape geometry with a length of ~30 km and a width of ~15 km. The geometry of normal faults formed in the Piranshahr basin is consistent with the structural pattern of the causative faults. History of seismic activity and structural elements imply that the largest earthquakes in the Piranshahr basin can be in the moderate magnitude range. This is a key issue in earthquake hazard analyses and risk assessments, especially for Piranshahr city.
