Comparison of End Region Losses on Both Sides of a Synchronous Generator Using Finite Element Analysis abstract
Accurate estimation of end region loss in a largesynchronous generator (SG) is a crucial task because hotspots are generally placed in end regions. SG endregions include manifold details that ignoring each ofthem can cause large errors in loss calculation.Although SGs on both end sides are almost similar, thepresence of circuit rings on one side changes magneticfield distributions. Modeling of SGs usually has beendone neglecting circuit rings. In this paper 3D finiteelement analysis is applied for end region simulation onboth sides of a two poles SG. End region componentsincluding press plate, fingers, stepping, supportbrackets, Tension bars, and bolts are considered inmodeling and those losses are compared in ratedworking conditions. A notable increase in press plateeddy loss has been shown on the side where circuit ringsare placed.
