Abstract:
۹ Use of non-motorized transport units such as bicycles shows an increasing popularity due to many۱۰ advantages it offers. However, relatively high traffic safety hazards associated with such manner۱۱ of transport is still a big concern despite all the implemented safety measures. Studies on bicycle-۱۲ involved accidents at intersections are relatively limited and most of them have not differentiated۱۳ the categories of intersections in their analyses; whereas, the characteristics of bike crashes may۱۴ considerably differ across diverse intersections. A key feature in the analysis of bicycle-motor۱۵ vehicle accidents is Crash Typology, a single variable representing a combination of multiple۱۶ crash descriptors of the involved vehicle and bicycle during the accident occurrence moments.۱۷ Understanding the composition of crash types at various intersections, by crash severity level,۱۸ could provide important insights. However, very few studies have focused on this topic, and they۱۹ have some limitations. Thus, this paper proposes an analysis addressing some of these limitations۲۰ in recent research for the bicycle-involved crash typology at different intersections. The crash۲۱ data from ۲۰۱۶-۲۰۱۷ period in Pennsylvania, US was used in the analysis.
