Abstract:
This paper presents a new two-terminal fault location algorithm, which takes into account the distributed parameter line model. This algorithm utilizesunsynchronized measurements of voltages and currents from two ends of a line to estimate the location of the fault. The proposed algorithm is independent of faultresistance and does not require any knowledge of source impedance. Voltages of the two terminals in the fault time are only equivalent at the fault location. Therefore, to find the accurate location of fault, an objective function is defined on the difference of the voltages of the two terminals in the fault time and then it is minimized. Solving this optimization problem, the location of fault is determined. The developed fault location algorithm has been thoroughly tested using signals of PSCAD/EMTDC simulations of faults on a transmission line. The presented evaluation shows the validity of our proposed algorithm and its high accuracy
