The evaluation of Seroprevalence of anti-VZV antibody among acute Ischemic stroke patients in Comparison with control group

Background and Aim: Varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection of cerebral arteries produces a vasculopathy, manifesting most often as ischemic stroke and less often as hemorrhagic stroke. The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of seropositivity of anti-VZV IgG between acute stroke patients and control group. Materials and Methods: In this population-based cross-sectional study, ۸۷ patients with acute ischemic stroke were selected as case group during ۲۰۱۴-۲۰۱۵,. Eighty-seven individuals without a history of stroke or other neurological disorders also were considered as control group based on their age and sex. VZV IgG was measured by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS V۱۹- ۱۶. Two groups were adjusted for socio-demographics and stroke risk factors. Results: The mean age of the stroke patients  and control group were ۷۱.۳۳ years (± ۱۰.۹۵) and ۶۷.۶۹ years (± ۱۱), respectively. The rate of seroprevalence of anti-VZV IgG was ۹۵.۵% in the stroke patients versus ۹۶.۳% in the control group. This difference was not statistically significant (p-value=۰.۵). Conclusions: the Current study does not provide any evidence of an association between the immune response to VZV as a marker of prior infection and acute ischemic stroke.
