Abstract:

The present study is investigating the effect of using first language (L۱) on young Persian students. Inaddition, the learners’ attitudes towards using L۱ were surveyed. Sixty young language learners in RAHAinstitute of Zanjan, Iran were selected as the participants through availability sampling. After selecting theparticipants, they were assigned into experimental and control groups. The participants of experimental groupwere also given a questionnaire about learners’ attitude towards using L۱ in English class, which had beendeveloped by the researcher to measure learner’s attitude toward the treatment. Data were analyzedstatiscally. The results of tests showed that using L۱ in teaching has a positive effect on participants’performance. The analysis of questionnaire and the interviews also indicated positive attitudes toward usingL۱ and the necessity and efficiency of using them in English class especially in the case of grammarteaching.
