Abstract:
This paper proposes to examine The Significance of Nature Symbolism in the great work of literature, Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man And the Sea. In order to reconstruct these symbols, motifs, and meanings, this paper will examine the symbols that are related to the environment and nature. By closely examining these symbols one can interpret the whole major theme of the novel. There are several items and symbols in this work that help to develop the story to another level. Based on this point, this essay with a symbolic approach, will examine how these elements contribute to building a context in this work base on Ernest Hemingway’s main concern. There is always a confrontation between man and nature. Modern man finds this struggle in his everyday life and can’t get away with it. This is the main concern of Hemingway and his novels. In the end, we know that it’s the alienation that has rooted in the modern man. It is about his place, something he can’t find and struggle with it
