Abstract:

Recently, Ti–29Nb–13Ta–4.6Zr (TNTZ alloys) has been developed as a new β-metastable type biomedical material composed of only non-toxic and non-allergenic elementswhich provide excellent biocompatibility properties. The present study deals with the effects of the thermomechanical processing parameters on the microstructure evolution of TNTZ alloy in the temperatures of 700 and 900 °C (above the β transus). Accordingly, the as-forgedexperimental alloy after applying the homogenization annealing (at 850 °C for 45min), was isothermally hot compressed at two temperatures of 700 and 900 °C under the strain rate of 0.3s-1 and 0.003s-1. The results indicated that the deformation temperature has a significant effect onthe related flow stress characteristics. The occurrence of dynamic recovery and the formation of a macro shear band are thought to be the main mechanisms for the observed flow behavior in investigated range of temperature.
