NUMERICAL MODELING OF MATERIAL DUMPING DURING BREAK WATER CONSTRUCTION USING SPH abstract
Rubble mound break waters are conventional structures for seaports, shore protection and other onshore usages. During construction process of rubble mound break waters regardless of method (either Sea-based or land-based methods) erratic nature of material sedimentation makesdifficulties in material placing and remarkably reduces construction efficiency. This reconditebehavior dramatically increases the amount of essential rock material especially for fine sandsand gravels which is used in the core layer. Proper results of dumping depend on many differentvariables including equipment (split barge, bottom door barge, tilting barge, etc.) water depth, current velocity and rock characteristics such as density, grading, dimensions and shape. In this paper the particle-based Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method had been implemented to simulate this phenomenon in variant cases. Numerical models based on Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics can inherently model multiply connected free surfaces and hence can be used to effectively capture coastal area hydrodynamics. The present research tries to propose a numerical method to model the mentioned phenomena.
