Effects of Medicinal Plants on Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Deficits: A Systematic Review Study

Abstract:

Background: Alzheimer’s disease is an age-related neurodegenerative disorder characterized by memory deficits. There is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but symptomatic treatment may improve the memory and other dementia related problems. Natural therapy including medicinal plants has been used in the treatment of memory deficit’s disease since a long time. The purpose of this study was to reviewed the role of different medicinal plants that play an important role in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and memory deficits using conventional herbal.Method: We included randomised controlled trials studies that done on medicinal plants such as, zizyphus jujube,cinnamomum verum and gingko biloba which have an antioxidant and anti inflammatory effects on Alzheimer's disease, and were published in PubMed, Google Scholar and SID databases during ۲۰۱۲- ۲۰۲۲. Then, by analyzing the full text of Persian and English articles, by applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria a total ۱۰ studies were selected and analyzed in this review.Results: From the review of studies, it was found that Alzheimer’s disease has been linked with oxidative stress, acetylcholine deficiency in the brain, and inflammatory processes. Substances extracted from plants, such as acetylcholine, which has neurological properties and is effective on short - term memory, can prevent this disease. zizyphus jujube, cinnamomum verum and gingko biloba are effective On acetylcholine transferase, they prevent the progress of Alzheimer's disease and have relieving effects.Conclusions: According to the studies, despite the bulk of knowledge regarding this complex disease, there is no complete cure except symptomatic treatment. So, the herbal therapy is now anticipated to control Alzheimer's disease progression and help to relieve the symptoms related to it. Herbal therapy can improve the life quality of patients with Alzheimer's disease and memory deficits.
