Abstract:
The application of robotics to disability and rehabilitation research is growing rapidly. The National Library of Medicine’s MEDLINE reports an increase of robotics citations. The research domains appears to be moving from a paradigm of building robotic arms with which persons with disabilities can perform activities of daily living to a paradigm of developing robotic devices that assist with therapy in the hope of achieving longer-term achievement gains. Data from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) also show an exponential increase of funding for rehabilitation robotics. All in all, as the technology develops, the area of discussion in this field increases. This article is organized to assess the development path and analyze the trends of robotics in the field of rehabilitation, by methods of futures studies. The research in the field of Rehabilitation Robotics has passed through many stages; some devices have come and gone with few obvious positive results. All however, have contributed to the volume of knowledge from which those now working in this field of research benefit. In order to understand the most recent developments in the robotics field and to predict how the future of this field will be shaped, one has to turn to the past. Only by briefly examining the history of the field including past devices and past trends, can predictions for the future be made. we must first understand the evolutionary process which led to our current technological status. As in the development of any other field, some ideas and inventions have worked and been expanded upon, while others have fallen by the wayside or become obsolete.
