Abstract:
Researches in the field of civil infrastructures have been focused on the Structural Health Moni-toring (SHM), since it could increase the safety and reduce the maintenance costs of engineering structures. Particularly for civil infrastructures, data acquisition using conventional wired sensor systems can be quite challenging to carry out due to difficulties in cabling, high equipment cost, and long setup time. Smart sensor networks (SSN) offer a unique opportunity to overcome such difficulties. Recent advances in sensor technology have realized low-cost smart sensors with on-board computation and wireless communication capabilities, making deployment of a dense array of sensors on large civil structures both feasible and economical. However it requires decentral-ized data acquisition and processing algorithms due to the limitation associated with wireless communication. System Identification as one of the main parts of SHM is the process of develop-ing, or improving a mathematical representation of a dynamical system using original or simulat-ed test data to describe the input-output relationship and it can be done through many time and frequency domain algorithms. In this study, System Identification includes two main steps. First, a method called the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA) is employed for modal parameter identification of dynamic systems. The method based on Minimum System Realization technique and Singular Value Decomposition (SVD). Second, conventional centralized algorithm changes into decentralized form to perform the identification locally and globally. Finally, algorithm im-plemented on IASC-ASCE SHM Benchmark and results verified by IASC-ASCE task group’s papers with acceptable errors and indicate how decentralization of sensors network reduced amounts of data needed to be transferred.
