Abstract:

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVESUrinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common causes of bacterial infection in the community and hospital. Urinary tract infection is more common in women than in men (۱,۲). The economic and public health costs resulting from urinary tract infection and the increasing antibiotic resistance are significant and have a large impact on the quality of life of infected patients (۳).MATERIALS AND METHODSIn this descriptive-cross-sectional study, during a one-year period from April to March ۲۰۲۲, urine samples of outpatients and inpatients referred to Imam Khomeini hospital in Shirvan were collected using the Clean Catch Midstem method. First, the samples were cultured on McConkey agar and blood agar media, and incubated at ۳۵-۳۷°C for ۲۴-۴۸ hours. A colonization rate equal to or greater than ۱۰۵ colonies per ml was considered as a positive sample. Then the morphology of the colonies is examined and standard biochemical tests are carried outincluding: Urea, SIM, MR/VP, TSI and Simon Citrate, phenylalanine deaminase and warm dyeing were used.RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONIn this study, ۲۰۸۹ urine samples from outpatients and inpatients referred to the laboratory of Imam Khomeini Shirvan Hospital, ۱۲۲ urine cultures (۵.۸۴%) were positive ۹۲ samples (۷۵.۴%) are women and ۳۰ samples (۲۴.۶%) are men. The most common bacterial isolate is Escherichia coli with ۷۷ (۶۳. ۸۲%) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ۱ (۰.۸۲%) were isolated.CONCLUSIONAccording to the obtained results, Escherichia coli bacteria is the most common cause of UTI, which is more than other isolates and is the most dominant bacteria in causing UTI. And the number of Gram-negative bacteria, especially Enterobacteriaceae family, is more than Gram-positive bacteria in causing urinary tract infection.
