Compassion Fatigue, Compassion Satisfaction, and Burnout in Emergency Nurses: ASystematic Review Study

Abstract:

Introduction: In today's modern society, work-related stress is accepted as a job threat that can reducecompassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue. Healthcare providers in critical care and emergency areas mayexperience high levels of compassion fatigue and burnout that impair their quality of professional life. Nurseswho experience higher levels of compassion satisfaction have more protective resources to deal with thenegative consequences of job stress and help them use coping mechanisms to prevent compassion fatigue whendealing with traumatized individuals.Search Method: The current research is a systematic review; for this purpose, articles in line with the researchgoal and written in Farsi or English were included in the study. Search without a time limit and until October۲۰۲۳ using the keywords "compassion fatigue," "compassion satisfaction," "job burnout," and "emergencynurse" in international databases PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct and EMBASE and internalIranmedex, Magiran, SID and Irandoc databases were performed. In the initial search, ۴۱۲ studies wereobtained, which were reduced to ۷۷ studies by screening based on the title and abstract of the articles in the firststep and by screening the articles based on the full text of the articles in the next step, seven articles met theinclusion criteria.Conclusion: According to studies, factors related to life disorders, traumatic memories, stress in emergencycare, and low levels of manager support predict compassion fatigue and higher job burnout and strengthenempathy, self-compassion, and high levels of manager support. Reducing job burnout and improvingsatisfaction comes from compassion. So, providing strategies to improve knowledge and awareness ofcompassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue, and job burnout can prevent emotional burnout in emergencynurses and help identify interventions for nurses to remain empathetic and compassionate in their profession.
