Abstract:

Geopolymer materials, both industrial-based and natural-based variants have attracted attention within the construction industry, due to their physio-chemical properties and environmental efficiencies. Recent investigations indicate that using waste materials such as calcined clay soils and industrial wastes led to the production of high-performance geopolymer binders. Geopolymer concrete, which is created by incorporating products like fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag has demonstrated promising outcomes in terms of strength and durability when compared to traditional concrete. Moreover, there has been exploration into using fly ash and Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) as substitutes for aggregates in the geo-polymerization process with geopolymer aggregates showing potential as a replacement for aggregates in concrete production. Additionally, the inclusion of fibers such as hemp, kenaf, and bamboo, in matrices has been found to enhance the mechanical properties and toughness of composite materials. Overall extensive research has focused on studying the performance of both industrial geopolymers to develop friendly yet high-performance construction materials.
