Abstract:
Polyploidy induction plays a significant role in the enhancement of plant characteristics and secondary metabolite production. This study aimed to investigate the induction of polyploidy in Coriandrum sativum L. (coriander) using colchicine treatment. Three genotypes of coriander were subjected to colchicine treatment at different concentrations (۰%, ۰.۳%, and ۰.۵%). Chromosomal counting and stomatal analysis were performed to assess the polyploidy induction. The results demonstrated the successful production of tetraploid plants with an increased number of chromosomes. The pollen grains of tetraploid plants exhibited larger sizes and asymmetrical dimensions compared to their diploid counterparts. Moreover, tetraploid plants showed significant morphological differences, including reduced plant height, larger seed size, fewer umbels and umbellets per plant, increased vegetative growth, and larger leaf size. Stomatal analysis revealed a decrease in stomatal cell density and an increase in their size in tetraploid plants. The study highlights the potential of colchicine-induced polyploidy in coriander breeding to obtain variants with improved characteristics.
