Comparing the Perspective of Medical and Non-medical Sciences Students regarding the Good Teacher Characteristics: A Systematic Review abstract

Introduction: Although different characteristics of a good teacher have been presented by numerous studies, efforts continue to determine common characteristic. This study aims to compare the perspective of Iranian Medical and Non-medical Sciences students regarding the good teacher characteristics. Method:  In this systematic review, a systemic search of databases (Medline, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, ProQuest, CIVILICA), and Google Scholar search engine was conducted for relevant studies with no time limit up to April 2024. The quality of the information was evaluated using the STROBE tool. Results: Finally, 17 related articles were included. The most important characteristics of a good university teacher based on the medical sciences students’ perspectives were 1. Personal characteristics (apparent cover, tone of voice, communication skills, respect for the student, compliance with the rules, professional ethics, allocating time to students while teaching), 2. Scientific characteristics (scientific mastery, teaching skills, and evaluation skills), and 3. Clinical characteristics (clinical skills, counseling and guidance, role model, ability to integrate basic and clinical concepts, and scientific expertise). In non-medical students, the main characteristics of a good teacher can be classified in three categories: 1. Cognitive (scientific ability, scholarship, creativity, and scientific experiences), 2. Emotional (communication skills, intimacy, interest in specialized field, positive thinking, high expectations from students, correct judgment and justice in dealing with the student, compliance with the educational rules, respecting students, professionalism, and reasonableness), and 3. Behavioral (supervision and evaluation of students, fair evaluation, adaptability, teaching skills, and encouraging students). Conclusion: Based on the results, the perspectives of the Medical and Non-medical Sciences students about the characteristics of good teacher were the same in most of the subjects.
