Sustainable construction risk reduction via leanconstruction; a scientometric review abstract
The construction industry's efforts towards sustainability have sparked interest inincorporating lean management principles. This article reviews the application of leanmanagement capabilities to enhance sustainability by mitigating risks in constructionprojects. The complexities inherent in the construction industry necessitate effective riskmanagement strategies to ensure project success amidst dynamic environmental changes.Lean construction, originating from manufacturing principles, aims to eliminate wasteand optimize project efficiency. Despite its potential benefits—such as reduced projectcompletion time, enhanced collaboration, and improved sustainability—adoption in theconstruction sector remains uneven. This study reviews literature from 2016 to April2024, using scientometric analysis to map lean sustainable construction research focusedon risk management. Initial data from Web of Science found 44 relevant papers.Scientometric methods like keyword co-occurrence and author co-citation were used tovisualize trends and identify themes. Findings show increasing scholarly interest, notablyin journals such as Journal of Sustainability, Journal of Cleaner Production, and Buildingand Environment, with a marked rise in publications from 2021 to 2023. Key findingsemphasize the integration of lean principles to mitigate environmental, economic, andsocial risks associated with construction processes. Strategies discussed the use of leantools to control external environment risks. These approaches enhance sustainabilityoutcomes by reducing resource waste and environmental impact. In conclusion, whilechallenges persist in the adoption of lean methodologies, the synergy between leanmanagement and risk management frameworks offers promising avenues for improvingconstruction project sustainability. This review contributes to a deeper understanding oflean construction's potential in addressing contemporary challenges and providesactionable insights for practitioners aiming to integrate lean principles into sustainableconstruction practices effectively.
