Comprehensive Investigation of Pentastomiasis and Linguatulosis abstract

Linguatula serrata, one of the significant parasites in the field of veterinary and human medicine, is known to cause Halzoun syndrome in humans. This parasite attacks the respiratory system of domestic and wild carnivores in its adult stage and lives as a nymph in the mesenteric lymph nodes of sheep, goats, cows, and other domestic and wild animals. The present research focuses on studies conducted in Iran and worldwide, aiming to provide further insight into the life cycle, hosts, epidemics, disease symptoms, post-mortem examination, diagnosis, and treatment to control the parasite and reduce the risk of infection in humans and animals.Linguatulosis and pentastomiasis diseases are prevalent in carnivorous and herbivorous animals and can impact the health of animals and humans. In dogs and sheep, infection with Linguatula serrata is common and varies in prevalence. Based on the reports mentioned in this study, various species of this parasite have the ability to infect various hosts, including herbivores, rodents, aquatic birds, and mammals. Moreover, this disease can also infect humans. To control the disease, measures such as collecting stray dogs, avoiding the feeding of dogs with raw herbivore offal, eliminating infected herbivores' liver and offal, observing water and food hygiene, preventing dog contact with them, eliminating the mesenteric lymph nodes of animals, slaughtering animals in sanitary slaughterhouses and preventing illegal and unhygienic slaughter, using drugs like ivermectin and closantel, and avoiding the consumption of raw and semi-cooked liver and lymph nodes of animals are essential.
