Cognitive Decline In Heart Failure Patients: Mechanisms And Interventions abstract

Cognitive decline is a relatively common and severe co-morbid condition in patients with heart failure (HF), which has significant effects on individuals’ quality of life and challenges the process of disease management. This paper seeks to examine the causes of cognitive decline in HF patients and review the existing and perceived interventions. The articles for this systematic review were searched in PubMed, MEDLINE, and clinical trial registries, focusing on articles that analyze the link between heart failure and cognition. The first results prove that the decrease in regional cerebral blood flow, recruitment of various inflammatory markers, and neurodegeneration play significant roles in the cognitive decline observed in patients with HF. In addition, other factors such as depression and social isolation also have a significant degree of influence on the occurrence of the ailment. We also focus on bringing out management strategies like drug interventions that include ACE inhibitors and beta-blockers, exercise, and dietary interventions, and cognitive rehabilitation programs in ameliorating cognitive decline. More intense investigations for these treatments are needed in order to confirm their efficacy as well as to establish better management plans. These results support the need for a holistic strategy to target the complex issue of cognitive impairment in HF patients and, the need for cardiological, neurological, and psychological point of view. These insights highlight the need for future research to use large-scale, and longitudinal standard designs for the diagnosis and treatment of this complicated disease and to investigate new treatment strategies
