Capturing Daily Life Factors To Inform Targeted Suicide Prevention Interventions For Young People abstract

Suicide is a critical public health issue affecting young people globally, with rising rates among Iranian youth. Understanding the daily life factors influencing suicidal ideation is essential for developing targeted prevention interventions tailored to the unique context of young Iranians. This study aimed to explore the daily life factors contributing to suicidal ideation among young Iranians aged 18-25. A mixed-methods approach was employed, consisting of qualitative interviews and a quantitative survey. In-depth interviews were conducted with 30 young Iranians who had experienced suicidal ideation Based on the qualitative findings, a survey was developed and administered to 287 participants. Logistic regression and random forest classification were used for data analysis. The most significant daily life factors associated with suicidal ideation were financial difficulties (OR = 2.84, 95% CI: 1.92-4.21), family conflicts (OR = 2.56, 95% CI: 1.73-3.78), loneliness (OR = 2.11, 95% CI: 1.41-3.16), and academic pressures (OR = 1.92, 95% CI: 1.29-2.85). The random forest model achieved an accuracy of 82% and an AUC of 0.87, with financial difficulties, family conflicts, and loneliness identified as the most influential predictors. This study highlights the critical role of daily life factors, particularly financial difficulties, family conflicts, loneliness, and academic pressures, in influencing suicidal ideation among young Iranians. Targeted interventions addressing these factors, while considering cultural stigma and promoting protective factors, are essential for reducing suicide rates and fostering mental well-being in this population
