The Rise of Academic Tourism and Global Mobility: Insights from Knowledge Mapping and Higher Education Trends abstract

With the rapid development of computer technology, big data research has become vital in the information era. Information Visualization Technology (IVT) plays a key role in assisting researchers to process and analyze large data sets through tools such as knowledge mapping, which is essential for understanding trends and scholarly interactions in various fields. Concurrently, the increasing global mobility of students, faculty, and academic staff has led to the rise of Academic Tourism. From 1999 to 2017, the number of students studying abroad nearly tripled, highlighting the growth of this trend. Academic tourism has emerged as a distinct form of tourism, significantly contributing to the economies of host countries, especially in the U.S., the U.K., and Australia. Leading institutions such as Oxford and Cambridge universities attract a substantial number of international students due to their global prestige and extensive exchange programs. Programs like Erasmus+ in Europe and the Turing Scheme in the U.K. further encourage student mobility, enhancing participants' intercultural competencies and employability. Despite its growing importance, academic tourism remains a relatively new research area. This article seeks to systematically review the literature on academic tourism, analyzing key trends, keywords, and identifying the most successful countries and universities in attracting international students over the past two decades.
