The Economic Impact of Ports on Local Tourism Industries in Iran abstract
Ports play a critical role in shaping local economies by fostering trade, transportation, and tourism. In Iran, the economic impact of ports extends beyond commerce, significantly influencing the tourism industry in coastal areas. This paper examines the intricate linkages between ports and tourism, focusing on key Iranian ports such as Bandar Abbas, Chabahar, and Kish Island. Ports facilitate the development of tourism by improving accessibility, supporting cruise tourism, and fostering local business growth. However, these benefits come with challenges, including environmental degradation, congestion, and the need for sustainable development. This study highlights the dual role of ports as economic hubs and gateways to tourism, analyzing their contributions to job creation, infrastructure development, and regional economic growth. Empirical data, case studies, and graphical representations provide a comprehensive view of the economic and environmental dimensions of port-tourism interactions in Iran. Policymakers, stakeholders, and researchers can leverage these insights to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability, ensuring that Iran’s coastal tourism industry thrives in harmony with its maritime economy. Key findings reveal that port activities contribute to 12% of local GDP in Bandar Abbas, create over 5,000 tourism-related jobs in Qeshm, and have led to a 30% increase in visitor numbers in Chabahar. However, environmental degradation, such as mangrove loss and coral reef damage, poses significant threats to sustainable development. A mixed-methods approach combining quantitative analysis of economic indicators with qualitative insights from stakeholder interviews—is used to provide actionable policy recommendations, including green port technologies and community engagement strategies.
