Prevalence and Associated Factors of Recurrent Miscarriage in Women Aged 10 to 53 in Isfahan Province:A Population-Based Cross-Sectional Study abstract

Introduction: Recurrent miscarriage, defined as the loss of three or more consecutive pregnancies, significantly impacts couples who are trying to conceive. It is linked to psychological distress and can be a source of frustration for both patients and healthcare providers. Research indicates that about one-third of women seeking help at specialized clinics experience clinical depression, while one in five exhibit anxiety levels comparable to those found in psychiatric outpatient settings. In this study, we explore the prevalence of recurrent miscarriage among women aged 10 to 53 in Isfahan province and identify factors associated with it. 4. Methods and Materials: This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in Isfahan province in 2024. Our target population consisted of women of reproductive age (10 to 53 years) residing in Isfahan. multi-stage cluster sampling approach was used, and 3000 women were interviewed. To investigate factors related to abortion, Chi-square test, independent sample t-test, and multiple logistic regression were used.5. Results: Overall, 670 women (22.2%, 95% CI (22.04% -25.24%)) reported a lifetime history of abortion.19.4% had spontaneous abortion and 5.2% had recurrent miscarriage during their lifetime. Chi-square and independent sample t-test show significant associations between recurrent miscarriage and variables such as age, Spouse's age, marital status, women job, the number of children, stillbirth, relationship of couples, the distance between marriage and starting living together, using birth control methods. Additionally, the logistics regression showed, increasing age (OR =1.05, 95% CI: 1.01-1.10) and distance between marriage and starting living together(OR =1.005, 95% CI: 1.001-1.009) increased the odds of a positive lifetime history of recurrent miscarriage. Conclusion and discussion: The high rate of abortion and recurrent miscarriage emphasizes the need for educational intervention programs considering age reduction, and lifestyle modifications.
