Investigating the relationship between feelings about transplant with organ performance and adherence to medication in organ receivers abstract

Background: Organ transplantation is one of the best end-stage organ failure treatments. The study examined patient attitudes. toward the transplanted organ, organ function, and medication adherence in organ transplant recipients. Methods: This was a correlational study with a sample of 245 liver and kidney transplant recipients recruited from medical centers and clinics in Tabriz, Iran. Results: The study found that among the three fields—recipient's concern about the transplanted organ, positive attitude towards the transplanted organ, and psychological rejection or feeling of alienation—the highest score (27.40 ± 15.31) was in the second field, while the lowest score (14.68 ± 3.54) was in the third field. Patients showed high adherence to immunosuppressant drugs, with a mean Basel adherence score of 12.1±1.7 out of a possible score of 0-20. 155 individuals (63.3%) took immunosuppressive medications completely. Further, the Spearman correlation test revealed a significant positive correlation between questionnaire domains, feelings towards the transplanted organ, total score, and mean adherence to immunosuppressive medications (p < 0.01, r = 0.25).Conclusion: The results showing a positive correlation between recipient sentiments toward the donated organ and medication adherence emphasize the importance of transplant recipient perspectives. Optimizing immunosuppressive therapy compliance by considering patients' feelings would improve quality of life.
