Bactrian Camels and Alhagi maurorum : A symbiotic relationship for ecological restoration

Alhagi maurorum, commonly referred to as camelthorn, is a drought-resistant perennial shrub indigenous to regions of Asia. As an xerophytic species, A. maurorum has developed adaptations that enable it to flourish in the hot, dry, and saline environments characteristic of desert and semi-desert areas. The Bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus) is a unique and highly specialized herbivore native to Asia's harsh, arid landscapes. Alhagi maurorum constitutes a key component of the Bactrian camel's diet. However, we reviewed new articles and authoritative sites to achieve the following objectives. 1- A biological and ecological study of the Alhagi maurorum and Bactrian camels, 2- An analysis of the symbiotic relationship between the Alhagi maurorum and Bactrian camels for ecological restoration. Alhagi maurorum (camelthorn) is a highly nutritious plant that is a key part of the Bactrian camel's diet in its distribution areas. The plant's tough, fibrous material is well-suited to the camel's specialized digestive system, while the camel aids in dispersing the plant's seeds. This mutualistic relationship is crucial for the survival of both species. However, declining Bactrian camel populations due to habitat loss and overhunting now threaten the long-term viability of Alhagi maurorum. Conversely, the loss of this plant would severely impact the Bactrian camel's food sources. Protecting this interdependent ecosystem is critical for preserving the biodiversity of steppe distribution areas, requiring conservation efforts that account for the needs of both species. By safeguarding this symbiotic relationship, we can ensure a sustainable future for the Bactrian camel and the resilient plant species it depends on for survival.
