A review of the application of digital twins based on artificial intelligence for the management of dams and watersheds

A digital twin is a virtual copy of a physical system, process or product that allows monitoring, analysis and optimization of its performance in real time. In this article, by translating and rewriting scientific sources published by researchers related to South Korea's Water Resources Management Company and other scientific authorities, an overview of the use of digital twins based on artificial intelligence for managing dams and watersheds is presented in order to be introduced as a new method in water resources management. The platform introduced in this article is used to support decision-making in flood response and water resources management using real-time data and simulation models. This platform includes a digital twin based on the geographic information system of the entire dam and river water resources system with very high spatial and topographic accuracy and the necessary information of dams and rivers. The digital twin-based platform supports an efficient decision-making system for intelligent flood response and helps reduce flood damage through optimal and intelligent water management.
