Efficacy of Melatonin as an Adjuvant Therapy in Adults with Sepsis: A Systematic Review abstract

Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. The excessive inflammatory response in sepsis, characterized by cytokine release and overproduction of reactive oxygen species, leads to endothelial injury and oxidative damage to cells and organs. Despite current therapies, high mortality rates persist due to the lack of effective treatments targeting sepsis-induced inflammation and oxidative damage. Melatonin, a hormone renowned for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, has gained attention as a potential adjunctive therapy in sepsis management. This systematic review aims to evaluate the efficacy of melatonin treatment in improving clinical outcomes and reducing biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation in adults with sepsis.
