A STUDY ON ENGLISH GRAMMATICAL COLLOCATIONS abstract
The knowledge of collocations has been widely recognized as an important aspect in language learning. The appropriate use of collocations enables the learners to speak more fluently, makes their speech more comprehensible and helps them produce more native-like utterances and therefore plays a very important role in SLA. Moreover, since each language has its unique collocation patterning, collocation poses problem in translation since both translators’ and learners’ intuition, more often is inadequate for the felicitous transfer of collocation in translation. Based on Benson ET all's classification of collocations, there are two types of collocations, lexical and grammatical collocations. This study is aimed at finding out the closest equivalent of English grammatical collocations of verb +verb-ing and verb + to-infinitive in Azeri. Based on 200 data, it was cleared that both English grammatical collocations verb + verb-ing and verb + to-infinitive are translated as infinitive + verb in Azeri. This research is corpus-based, both qualitative and quantitative study
