An Introduction to Globalization and Localization in Urban Planning

The process of globalization has had widespread impacts on urban planning, transforming cities into hubs of economic competition, cultural shifts, and environmental challenges. In contrast, the localization approach emphasizes preserving indigenous identities, enhancing local participation, and promoting environmental sustainability, aiming to strike a balance between these two paradigms. This review article, utilizing credible studies and a qualitative methodology, examines the effects of globalization and localization across economic, socio-cultural, and environmental dimensions. It highlights how local approaches can mitigate the adverse effects of globalization and proposes strategies for integrating these two perspectives into urban planning.
