Abstract:
Iranian cinema has long been a site of both artistic innovation and political resistance, with filmmakers using allegory and metaphor to navigate the restrictive political environment of post-revolutionary Iran. This article examines the use of allegory and metaphor in Iranian films, focusing on their role in commenting on political oppression, social justice, and gender inequality. The Iranian New Wave, which emerged in the ۱۹۶۰s, marked a critical shift in the country’s cinematic landscape, moving away from melodrama and commercial filmmaking toward a more minimalist, socially engaged approach. Iranian filmmakers, such as Abbas Kiarostami, Jafar Panahi, and Rakhshan Bani-Etemad, employed allegory and metaphor to subtly critique the political regime while exploring themes of personal autonomy, societal conformity, and existential struggles. Films like Kiarostami’s Taste of Cherry (۱۹۹۷), Panahi’s Offside (۲۰۰۶), and Bani-Etemad’s The Blue-Veiled (۱۹۹۵) use allegorical elements to convey complex social and political messages while evading direct censorship. By analyzing these films, this article reveals how allegory and metaphor function as tools of resistance, allowing filmmakers to reflect on the limitations of Iranian society and critique the state-imposed restrictions on freedom and expression. Furthermore, it explores the broader impact of these cinematic techniques on global filmmaking, demonstrating how the Iranian New Wave has influenced filmmakers around the world in their approach to political and social commentary. This study emphasizes the role of Iranian cinema in shaping the global narrative of resistance, highlighting the power of allegory and metaphor in films that challenge dominant ideologies and offer nuanced perspectives on cultural and political issues.
