Abstract:

Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (FRP) laminates have received extensive attention due to their high specific strength and high specific stiffness. They are used vastly in various civilian and non-civilian industries. Numerous studies have been conducted to identify and analyze deformation mechanisms occurring during dynamic penetration and perforation of FRP laminates. In this article, a new model is developed which considers friction between projectile nose and target material. The model developed here, is based on Wen’s model of FRP laminate target struck by a projectile. A number of experiments were designed, performed and analyzed for ogive nose projectile and carbon/epoxy laminates. An equation for empirical constant β is derived using the results of experimental investigation. The results of the new model and Wen's model were compared with experimental results. The results of comparison showed that the new model is in good agreement with experimental investigation. In fact, the results of the new model are more accurate than Wen's model. Also, perforations of the same projectile into FRP laminates were simulated using LS-DYNA capability. Impact velocity range was about 100 m/s and normal impact were considered. Simulation results were compared with analytical and experimental results and the results of the comparison showed a very good agreement between them
