Abstract:
In this paper, performance and emissions of a four‐stroke SI engine operating on ethanol‐gasoline blends of E0,E5 and E10 in a rational range of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) with the aid of a 3D CFD code have beenstudied. CFD codes do not share high expenses and operational difficulties of experimental studies, but they dopresent acceptable results. The results of simulation were compared to the experimental data. There is a goodagreement among the results. The calculations were carried out for EGR ratios between 0% and 20%. The resultsrevealed that using ethanol‐gasoline blended fuels increases the power output of the engine marginally. Theconcentration of CO and HC emissions were measured and found to be decreased when ethanol blends wereintroduced. This was due to the high oxygen percentage in the ethanol. In contrast, the concentration of CO2 andNOx was found to be increased when ethanol is introduced. Increasing EGR level while proved to have asignificant decreasing effect on engine power, but also have a slight emission reducing effect on CO and HC levelsup to 10% of EGR and a notable plummet in NOx emission levels.
