Abstract:
The Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem faces an existential threat from the rapid development of quantum computing technology, which has the potential to break widely deployed cryptographic protocols that secure current IoT communications. This paper addresses the urgent need for quantum-resistant security solutions specifically designed for resource-constrained IoT devices. We present QRIoT, a comprehensive framework for implementing and evaluating post-quantum cryptographic (PQC) protocols in IoT environments. The framework includes: (۱) a novel lightweight lattice-based key exchange protocol optimized for constrained devices, (۲) a hybrid signature scheme that balances security and efficiency, and (۳) an adaptive security orchestration mechanism that dynamically selects appropriate algorithms based on device capabilities and security requirements. We implement and evaluate these protocols on representative IoT hardware platforms, including ۸-bit AVR microcontrollers, ۳۲-bit ARM Cortex-M devices, and ESP۳۲ modules. Our extensive benchmarking demonstrates that the proposed lattice-based key exchange reduces energy consumption by ۴۷% compared to current NIST PQC candidates while maintaining equivalent security levels. The hybrid signature scheme achieves a ۶۳% reduction in signature size with only a ۱۲% increase in verification time. Security analysis confirms the resistance of our protocols against both classical and quantum attacks, while implementation optimization reduces memory footprint by ۳۸% compared to reference implementations. Our results demonstrate that quantum-resistant security can be practically deployed even on severely constrained IoT devices, providing a viable path toward securing the IoT ecosystem against the impending threat of quantum computers.
