Partially Stabilized Zirconia (8 wt%Y2O3-ZrO2), A Wear-Resistant Thermal Barrier Coating abstract
The aim of this paper is to introduce Partially Stabilized Zirconia (8wt%Y2O3-ZrO2), as Thermal Barrier Coatings and investigate the wear and tribological behavior of this type of coating. Using Air Plasma Spraying (APS), conventional and nano-structured 8wt%Y2O3-ZrO2 coatings were applied on Ni based-bond coated 304 austenitic stainless steel substrates. Employing ball-on- disk wear testing equipment, wear properties uch as weight loss and coefficient of friction were determined. Using optical and scanning electron microscopy, microstructural characteristics of coatings produced and worn surfaces were investigated. Results obtained revealed that compared with conventional coating, the nano-structured one shows better wear resistance at various wear distances. From the microstructural observations, the nature of coatings and mechanism of wear were also determined.
