THREE DIFFERENT SCHEMES FOR ANALYZING THE CAVITATED PART OF LUBRICANT FLOW IN JOURNAL BEARINGS abstract
This work deals with three different schemes in order to analyze the cavitation effect in journal bearings. In the present study, a numerical thermohydrodynamic analysis of journal bearings operating under laminar flow and steady condition is presented. Numerical solutions of the full three-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations, coupled with energy equation in the lubricant flow and heat conduction equations in the shaft and bush are obtained for a bearing of finite length. Finite different forms of the governing equations are solved in the computational plane and the SIMPLE algorithm is used for the pressure–velocity coupling. A homogeneous mixture of lubricant and vapor is assumed in the cavitated region and three different schemes are used for solving the governing equations in this part of flow. Numerical results show that one of these schemes works better than the others to investigate the thermohydrodynamic characteristics of journal bearings.
