Abstract:

In this paper, deformation and energy absorption capacity of thin-walled tubes with square section shape and 2 mm thickness are investigated in two different deformation mode, folding and splitting, experimentally. The tubes have the same volume, height, average section area and material. The results of experiments are valid because they had been repeated for three times and final results of all are in good agreement with each other. The experiments show how using different deformation mode of thin-walled structures can effect on the energy absorption capacity and deformation shape. Comparison of these two deformation mode shows folding has more energy absorption capacity and average force than splitting. Since the maximum force is concerned in impact events, splitting method is recommended, due to their uniform load-displacement curves and therefore, there is less difference between the maximum and the average forces.
