A New Approach to Choose the Appropriate Circuit Breakers Based on Analysis of the Transient Inrush Currents abstract
This paper discusses the best choice of circuit breakers in power systems based on the analysis of Inrush Currents. In this paper inrush currents in power systems are introduced while switching occurs and the reasons of its occurrence are investigated. Then basic theory concerning capacitor bank, back to back cables, lines and transformers switching transients along with each mitigating technology, is presented. After that analyzing of the inrush currents in power transformers as a case study will be expressed. Later, the restrikes and re-ignitions in circuit breakers are illustrated and in each case, with consideration of inrush current, the most appropriate circuit breaker is chosen. To evaluate these inrush currents, the software package ATP is used to simulate the energizing of them. Mathematical computations of quantities such as peak transient currents provided for each case. These are compared to the values obtained from the simulations of each case study.
