Abstract:

The aim of the present work is to release ceramic tiles with superior surface mechanical characteristics by theaddition of nano-oxides, such as silica on tiles containing slag, since such advanced ceramic oxides are well known for theirexcellent mechanical properties. Nano‐SiO2 in the range of 0 ‐ 3 wt% was added to tiles containing slag. The blendedsamples were hydraulic pressed into rectangular molds, oven dried and sintered to 1138°C. Modulus of rupture ofsintered specimens was examined. Phases present in the sintered products were identified using X‐ray Diffractometer(XRD), while the micro structural examination was conducted using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Phases likequartz, wool‐lastonite, anorthite and institute were identified in the sintered products. The SEM revealed crystalsembedded in the glassy matrix. With the addition of nano‐SiO2 additive, the bending strengths of both types of tileswere increased.
