Abstract:
Collagen-based nanocomposites at different organo-modified sodium montmorillonite loadings were produced by solvent casting method. The composition included of a mixture of collagenhydrolysate/polyvinyl alcohol with organo-modified sodium montmorillonite (0–4% w/w). Some kinds of surfactants with different ammonium and phosphonium cations were used to modify the sodium montmorillonite interlayer galleries. Modification of sodium montmorillonite characterized with X-raydiffraction technique. The effect of organoclay quantity on the structural, thermal, swelling, mechanicaland biocompatibility properties of nanocomposites were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscope, thermogravimetric analyzer, tensiometeric, swelling and hemolysis tests. Scanning electron microscopy images show high degree of dispersion inclay/polymer nanocomposite of 1-3% clay to polymer ratio and hence lead to enhanced or better thermal and mechanical properties and they have good swelling and biocompatibility properties. Consequently, even though these natural polymer based bio-anocomposite is in infancy, we hope it has a chance to be examined for its potential in cell culture scaffold and wound dressing in the future.
