Abstract:

Age-related Macular Degeneration is the major cause of vision loss after age 50 in the world. AMD is characterized by loss of the retinal pigment epithelium within the macula. In retinal tissue engineering, gelatin-chitosan scaffold is replaced in the Bruch’s membrane and suitable environment prepared to RPE cell growth. This scaffold may cause retinal detachment. Therefore, the factors create retinal detachment with scaffold should be investigated. In this study, two factors including intraocular pressure and retinal strain were investigated. In order to investigating these factors, gelatin-chitosan scaffold, RPE and retinal cells by using COMSOL software were simulated. The results show, 1) IOP equal 1668.481 Pa, this pressure is in the range of normal IOP. 2) Retinal strain was calculated as 0.1163, this strain is lesser than frailer strain. This simulation illustrate that gelatin-chitosan scaffold don’t cause retinal detachment.
