LOCATION BASED SERVICES; GEOMATICS APPROACH

Location based services are gaining prime importance in our increasingly mobile and highly (Information Technology) IT enabled world. With modern legislation and interest in utilizing Geo-spatial information for providing practically useful information to users of mobile services the scope and capability of informing, alerting and involving the user is evolving. This paper examines the current LBS technologies with emphasis on Geomatics application. Positioning methods and GIS functions that are used in LBS have been elaborated. A pilot case study has been implemented using GPS, satellite communication and Iranian Roads database. This primary implementation is a navigation applications of LBS with functionality of Web based GIS. Disseminating Iranian roads information from Internet to wireless environment has been successfully implemented and discussed in this paper. It is concluded that the LBS delivery adds the margin of profitability to the Transportation and Terminal Organization.
