Cytogenetics of Tareyeh-Irani (Allium sp.), a natural autotetraploid abstract
Tareyeh-Irani is a herb straight leaves, that is used for flavouring or decorating savoury food in raw and cooked condition. Karyotype analysis and chromosome behaviour in seven population of Tareyeh-Irani (Allium sp.) is reported. The somatic karyotype consists of 32 metacentric to submetacentric chromosomes. As expected for an autotetraploid, the chromosomes arranged into groups of four on the basis of size, arm ratio and position of secondary constriction. A detailed analysis of metaphase I of meiosis in pollen mother cells in this taxon showed that the most common chromosome configurations were bivalents. There were o.23 per cent univalents, 87.73 per cent bivalents and 12.03 per cent quadrivalents in 54 metaphase I cells obtained from 35 plants. The meiosis behaviour in Tareyeh-Irani were truly similar with autotetraploid Allium porrum. A detailed analysis of metaphase I of Allium porrum has confirmed that despite frequent quadrivalents pairing was high at prophase I, but the majority of quadrivalents are resolved into bivalent associations at metaphase I. According to information, this is the first meiosis study and analysis of karyotype for this taxon.
