A Framework Toward 2D-3D MR Cardiac Image Registration During Respiration for MRI-guided Procedures abstract

Among the variety of imaging modalities the capability of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in dynamic mode helps cardiologists to acquire high quality images of cardiac anatomy that assists diagnosis. Despite its superiority, the nature of MRI is very sensitive to subject’s motion such as the cyclic heart motion and the respiratory motion. To overcome the respiratory motion, patient should hold his breath during imaging. But, this is problematic for some patients such as children or very old ones. To solve the problem, registration as a special case of image fusio is considered in this study. Our objective is real-time (RT) 2D to 3D MR cardiac image registration, with no more breath-hold restriction. To achieve the goal, we propose to register RT MR images into MR images captured in breath-hold mode for only one respiration cycle. Having high resolution prior makes the RT MR enhancement feasible and more accurate.
