Abstract:
Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) are consideredas a promising tool for future monitoring, protection and controlof power systems. So far in solving the Optimal PMU Placement(OPP) problem, it was assumed that the PMUs have sufficientnumber of channels such that a PMU placement on any nodewould make all the neighboring nodes observable. This paperpresents a method in which the OPP problem has been solvedusing PMUs with limited number of channels. In this study animproved Branch & Bound is implemented to optimize the PMUplacement considering number of analog channels. Finally, thezero injection buses are included in the network when the OPPproblem is solved with PMUs having limited number of channels.The proposed methods are tested on IEEE-14,30 bus systems andalso 17-bus test system. Detailed placement strategies arepresented for the test systems.
