Removal of lead from aqueous solutions using activated carbon prepared from industrial sewage sludge abstract

Conversion of industrial sewage sludge to useful activated carbons is asignificant process since it reduces environmental problems associatedwith disposal of waste sludge, enhances wastewater treatment usingcarbons produced from industrial waste itself. Adsorption capacity of anovel mesoporous activated carbon produced from industrial sewagesludge was evaluated. Activated carbon was prepared from sewage sludgeby chemical activation. Pyrolusite was added as a catalyst duringactivation and carbonization. In this paper, the adsorption of Pb(II) fromaqueous systems on activated carbon prepared from industrial sewagesludge has been studied using the batch process. The effects of initial pH,initial concentration of metal, and contact time on Pb(II) adsorption wereinvestigated. The activated carbon exhibited a good adsorption potentialfor lead ions.
