Hydrogen Technologies in South Africa – Pt Challenge abstract

The Department of Science and Technology spearheaded the NATIONAL HYDROGEN AND FUEL CELL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY AND IMPLEMENTATION PLAN, which is presently being implemented through the hubs/ centers of competence. The grand challenge of developing PGM based catalysts targeted at 25 percent of the world’s fuel cell market by 2020 has been set. Worldwide platinum distribution shows South Africa as the largest source and with increased annual outputs, should meet the world demands. The target reduction of platinum used in cars from 2.0 oz to 0.2 oz provides an excellent opportunity for future markets. The introduction of hydrogen technologies is South Africa are planned to respond to the platinum challenge.
