An economic application of superconducting magnetic energy storage for load-ability improvement of Iranian electric network abstract

This paper investigates an economic application of superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) for network load-ability improvement. The proposed application is used as a second task of SMES, making it more economically feasible. A practical realization of the control method using the locally measurable signals is considered. The simplified power system of the western Iranian network is selected to verify the proposed method. The simulation results of this system indicate that the load-ability of the controlled system is improved by 18% compared with the non-controlled one, assuming the stability conditions remain unchanged. The economic cost of energy supplied by a two-purpose SMES is reduced to 50% of that of the one-purpose one. Based on the sensitivity analysis, a 25% reduction in SMES investment cost will cause it become economically feasible as compared with gas turbines as the cheapest peak power generation in Iran.
