Abstract:
This work carried out to investigate the effect of extrusion and rolling process on the microstructure of Mg-Gd-Zn (GZ61) alloys. The samples were examined by using optical microscopy (OM) to evaluate the modification efficiency of the extrusion and rolling treatment. Experimental results show that the microstructures of the as-cast Mg-6%Gd-1%Zn alloy consists of α-Mg and Mg5Gd phases with network structure. But by applying extrusion process, It is apparent that the necklace DRX is responsible for significant grain refinement. As compared to the microstructure of hot rolled and extruded specimens, it can be concluded that mechanical twinning rarely can be seen in extruded alloy. However, The resulting microstructure of hot rolled is showing equiaxed grains with considerable amount of mechanical twins
