Effect of pressure and bonding time on the bond strength in dissimilar diffusion welding of Inconel 600 to stainless steel 304 abstract

Dissimilar diffusion welding (DW) of superalloy Inconel 600 to austenitic stainless steel 304 was investigated in argon atmosphere with purity of 99.999% at 1050 ◦C for 15 and 30 minutes under three different uniaxial pressures 5, 7.5 and 10 MPa. Microstructure of the interface and fractography was evaluated by optical and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Mechanical properties of the weld was assessed with shear test. The results declared that intermetallic compounds such as FeNi, FeCr or Ni2.9Cr0.7Fe0.38 are formed across the bond. As applying pressure increased, the shear strength improved. The best shear strength, 124 MPa, was achieved at 1050 ◦C for 30 min under 10 MPa pressure. Mode of fracture was almost ductile at this condition
